Clark is the county seat of Clark County, in northeastern South Dakota. A post office was established at Clark in 1880, and it was platted in 1882. Clark was officially founded in 1886, three years before South Dakota became a state. The town took its name from Clark County. An early variant name was Clark Center.

During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Clark was 592 in 1890, growing to 1,290 in 1930. It's highest population was 1,484 in 1960, and the current population is estimated at 1,065 (2018).

Clark had two National Banks chartered during the Bank Note Era, and both issued National Bank Notes.
